UNT NAACP earns top honors

At a conference in Philadelphia, the University of North Texas NAACP chapter took home national awards in the youth and college division for Voter Empowerment, Economic Empowerment and Chapter of the Year.

NAACP President Brittany Burnam, Assistant Treasurer Cambria Jordan and Secretary Tarryn Oliver attended the conference. Burnam, who was re-elected for a second term, said the UNT chapter hadn’t won Chapter of the Year since 2010.

“These awards wouldn’t have been possible without the whole team,” Burnam said. “Our members, our supporters — we’ve had a lot of people who’ve helped us along the way.”

Harvest House launches food truck partnership

Coup de Taco will now have a permanent spot at Harvest House, a large bar and music venue at 331 E. Hickory St.

The Asian fusion style tacos include a pork belly taco with sesame ginger slaw, mango salsa and creamy sriracha sauce to the classic barbacoa.

Vegetarian options are also available, like fried avocado tacos and quinoa and sweet potato tacos.

More items are expected to be announced in the coming months.

When Derek Elrod was rushing a fraternity at the University of North Texas (UNT) in the fall of 2013, he was having, as he puts it, “the time of my life.” The brothers at the fraternity of his first choice, Sigma Phi Epsilon (SigEp), were surprisingly warm and welcoming.

University slates autism conference July 25

The annual “Adventures in Autism Intervention and Research Conference” is scheduled for Saturday, July 25, and registration is needed by Friday, July 17.

At the conference, specialists will talk about long-term care, how to help kids with autism be successful in school and how to improve social skills and awareness.

The conference runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the UNT Gateway Center. Registration is $95, and free child care is available. To register, visit http://autism.unt.edu/conference.

The National Association of Black Journalists announced its finalists for Student Chapter of the Year -- Northwestern University, University of North Texas, and Carolina Association of Black Journalists. The winner will be announced in Minneapolis at the 2015 NABJ Convention and Career Fair, the largest gathering of minority journalists.
