DENTON, Texas - The maestro José Hernández returned to Texas in July, accompanied by Mariachi Sol de Mexico to join colleagues ye instructors University of North Texas, to provide a summer workshop for students of the region.

Learn how to make a robot, discover more about the stars or find out how crime scene investigators identify fingerprints at Grandparents University, a two-day summer camp offered by the University of North Texas on June 19-20.

Grandparents — or other family members — and their young ones from ages 7 to 12 are invited to pick two out of 10 “majors” for hands-on experience. Campers have the option of staying in a university residence hall, where they can get an authentic taste of college life.

Summer music workshop teaches young musicians to play the harp

The TCU Summer Music Institute offered middle and high school students a chance to strengthen their musical abilities at this year’s Summer Harp Workshop. The workshop took place on June 19 and 20 and was directed by Dr. Laura Logan. Logan is the director of the TCU Harp Ensemble and was the founder and director of the Harpfire Summer Camp for 10 years. During the workshop, students participated in a variety of intense classes including solo masterclasses, ensemble rehearsals, and jazz improvisation. Summer reading success at Lakehills Area Library and Boys & Girls Club

Who says kids don't like to read? No one in Lakehills should. The Lakehills unit of the Boys & Girls Club of Bandera County and the Lakehills Area Library held cooperating summer reading programs this year and over 100 area children read hundreds and hundreds of books over a two-month period.

The children in the two programs will have celebrated their success yesterday and today with a hot dog party and prizes. The Boys & Girls club children partied at Hill Country Elementary School yesterday and the library children at the library today.
