About 4,800 students will move into 13 residence halls in preparation for the start of the fall semester. The move-in is equivalent to moving the total population of which nearby town?

The correct answer is B: Pilot Point. The City of Pilot Point, population 4,500, is 18 miles north of Denton and owes its name to its location on a ridge covered with trees. A tall cottonwood, says the Texas State Historical Association in its Handbook of Texas, was a landmark used by travelers, settlers, Native Americans and soldiers exploring the area in the early 1800s.  

Residence halls will open at 8 a.m., Aug. 21 ready for students to settle in with clothing, computers, favorite pillows, stuffed toys and mementos of home. You’ll be filled with Green Pride when you see those energetic students arriving on campus for the university's 121st year of classes.

The annual moveinpalooza will aided by more than 500 volunteers, including faculty, staff and students who will greet newcomers, soothe parents and friends and give directions. An estimated 2,800 lunches will be served in Crumley Park on Sunday Fun Day to participants.

By the way, the Texas State Historical Association is located right here on campus in Stovall Hall. It’s not too late to visit Room 175 for the association’s summer book sale, which continues through Aug. 31. Books are priced as low as $1. You’ll find titles such as Women and Texas History, a collection of presentations from an association conference, and William Goetzmann’s Exploration and Empire: The Explorer and the Scientist in the Winning of the American West.
