A minor in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Studies at the University of North Texas provides a better understanding of world diversity and can be beneficial for many career fields.
Sexual practices and attitudes affect politics, social arrangements, artistic creations and conceptions of the self. Human sexuality, in turn, has been shaped by medical and scientific discussions, economic imperatives, philosophy, religion, law, politics, art, visual culture and literature. In this way, sexual and gender minorities are greatly affected by society's perception of them.
Although most people consider sexuality a basic aspect of human life, perceptions vary historically, culturally and geographically.
During most of the 20th century, attempts to study sexuality were met with repression. The civil rights and feminist movements of the 1960s and 1970s launched efforts against the suppression of racial minorities and women. The confrontation against entrenched prejudices challenged sexual oppression, as well.
The Stonewall Riots of 1969 set in motion a national gay rights movement. During this era of social change, political activism and cultural shifts set the stage for gender and sexuality to emerge as a field of academic inquiry.
Completion of this minor also prepares you for graduate study in a growing number of programs in lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender-intersexed studies, women's studies and cultural studies.
Our LGBT Studies minor is the first program in the North Texas region devoted specifically to this area. The curriculum explores the roles of gender and sexual minorities in modern society across diverse disciplines. The disciplines include:

Talented faculty members from across the campus provide different viewpoints based on their experiences and research. They conduct research specific to LGBT issues in Texas, the American Southwest, the United States and internationally. Their research topics include:
You can pursue this minor regardless of your major or concentration. It requires completing 18 credit hours selected from a list of multidisciplinary academic courses, including 6 advanced hours (3000 level or higher).
The LGBT Studies steering committee meets annually to evaluate course offerings included in the minor. For an up-to-date list of approved courses, visit our website.
The Career Center, Learning Center and professional academic advisors are among the many valuable resources available to you at UNT. The Career Center can provide advice about internships, future employment opportunities and getting hands-on experience in your major. The Learning Center offers workshops on speed reading, study skills and time management. Academic advisors will help you plan your class schedule each semester.
We encourage you to fulfill the graduation requirements for the distinguished level of achievement under the Texas Foundation, Recommended or Distinguished Achievement high school program or the equivalent.
In your junior year, take the SAT or ACT and have your scores sent to UNT.
In your senior year, apply for admission at ApplyTexas.org by March 1 and request that your high school transcript be sent to the UNT admissions office.
Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses can count toward college credit at UNT.
