Have you always thought of yourself as an artist? Do you find yourself constantly drawing or painting, working out your ideas on paper or canvas? Do you like the direct and physical experience of working with your hands using pen and ink, pencils or oil and acrylic paints? The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art with a concentration in Drawing and Painting may be for you.
Studying Drawing and Painting at the University of North Texas can prepare you to become an artist or help you pursue a Master of Fine Arts degree.
Self-employed artists show and sell work in galleries, museums and a variety of other venues. The M.F.A. degree, being the terminal degree in studio art, will open opportunities for you to become a full-time professional artist and give you the credentials to teach in higher education.
Our instruction emphasizes basic technical information, demonstrations, lectures, slide presentations and individual and group critiques. Using this approach, we:
The Art Building and Oak Street Hall house two large painting studios and several drawing studios, enabling you to receive hands-on experience. The studios in the Art Building are used for beginning, intermediate, advanced and topics classes.
We provide many opportunities to exhibit your work as you progress through the program. Competitive exhibitions are held on campus in the UNT Art Gallery, the North Gallery, the Lightwell Gallery and the Cora Stafford Gallery. The annual Voertman Student Art Exhibition awards many cash prizes and art scholarships and is juried by art professionals. Students also participate in local, regional and international exhibitions.
Graduates of our B.F.A. program have been admitted to some of the nation's top graduate programs.
In addition to the college's Visiting Artist program, the Drawing and Painting area hosts renowned artists to show their work and meet with students.
Our faculty members are accomplished artists who are active and respected participants in the professional art world. Each faculty member exhibits their artwork nationally and internationally and maintains a high profile in their field.
A Living-Learning Community brings together art students who live on campus to enhance academic and social experiences.

Our College of Visual Arts and Design is one of the nation's most comprehensive visual arts schools and is considered one of the best in the Southwest. Our facilities also include three computer labs, a wood and sculpture workshop, a professional fine art print press and a visual resources library.
You'll need to meet the College of Visual Arts and Design's admission requirements to be qualified as a pre-major. These requirements are in addition to the ones administered by the university.
You'll take courses in art appreciation, art history, design and printmaking, in addition to drawing and painting courses. To monitor your progress through the degree program, you'll:
Our Career Center, Learning Center and professional academic advisors are among the many valuable resources available to you at UNT. The Career Center can provide advice about internships, future employment opportunities and getting hands-on experience in your major. The Learning Center offers workshops on speed reading, study skills and time management. Academic advisors will help you plan your class schedule each semester.
We encourage you to fulfill the graduation requirements for the distinguished level of achievement under the Texas Foundation, Recommended or Distinguished Achievement high school program or the equivalent.
In your junior year, take the SAT or ACT and have your scores sent to UNT.
In your senior year, apply for admission at ApplyTexas.org by March 1 and request that your high school transcript be sent to the UNT admissions office.
Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses can count toward college credit at UNT.
If you're attending a Texas community college, you should consult our online transfer guides, the UNT Undergraduate Catalog and an academic counselor or advisor to review your degree plan. Proper planning will allow you to receive the maximum amount of transfer credits.
Our Transfer Center will help you make a successful transition to college life at UNT by connecting you with a peer mentor and other campus resources. Each year, 3,800 students transfer to UNT.
