International Field Trip Registration

UNT-I Horizontal Bar Logo

Field trips abroad are offered in conjunction with a university course under the direction of a University of North Texas faculty or staff member. These are academic trips abroad that usually last one to two weeks. They are designed for a group of participants to travel together in order to complete a specific project or academic outcome.

The Study Abroad Office’s primary responsibility for this type of program is to provide risk management and emergency support. There is a $150 registration fee per participant (trip leaders are exempt) to cover the costs of risk management services, the provision of pre-departure resources, and in-program emergency assistance.  In addition, participants will be billed for comprehensive overseas accident/illness insurance and emergency evacuation coverage based on the length of their trip.

Faculty or staff planning a field trip abroad should register the experience with the Study Abroad Programs Office in accordance with UNT policy, (18.4.5 Student Travel Policy; 15.2.18 Study Abroad Policy).

To register an international group field trip, complete the instructions outlined on the Field Trip Registration page.

To register individual international travel for research or other university-sponsored activities, complete the instructions outlined on the International Travel Registration page.

Notify the Study Abroad Office at least 4-6 months prior to departure to insure that all necessary steps are completed in advance of the field trip. Please review the process timeline to learn more about these steps.

UNT Faculty Led Program vs. Field Trip Registration

Per Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board policy (19 Tex. Admin. Code § 4.262 (18, 31)), a course offered as part of a faculty led program must primarily be taught overseas, with at least 51% of the contact hours occurring while abroad. Conversely, more than 51% of a course with a field trip component must be taught on campus. Please consider these distinctions carefully before completing the field trip registration and contact the Study Abroad Office with any questions.

International field trips are narrow in scope and only available to students in a specific course.  The Study Abroad Office provides no program development, financial, or marketing assistance for these international experiences.  Students are not eligible for additional funding through Student Financial Aid and Scholarships Office for costs associated with field trips.  Field trips are not visible on the SAO website and are not represented at any events, including the annual Study Abroad Fair.  Registered field trip participants may apply for IEF Scholarships, but are not eligible for Study Abroad Travel Grants.

UNT faculty led programs may be broad in scope and appeal to a wide range of majors.  The Study Abroad Office provides comprehensive program development, assessment, budgeting, financial oversight, and marketing assistance for these programs.  The Faculty Led Program Coordinator processes program applications, responds to student enquiries, and provides detailed cost information to the Student Financial Aid and Scholarships Office on behalf of program participants.  Faculty led programs are highlighted online and through marketing events throughout the year.  Students participating in faculty led programs are eligible to apply for several UNT scholarships as well as many national awards.
