May 7, 2016

DENTON — The North Texas tennis team celebrated the 2015-16 season and honored numerous student-athletes at the team’s annual banquet at the Springhill Suites by Marriott on Friday evening.

Emceed by head coach Sujay Lama, the program looked back on a 13-10 season that saw the Mean Green advance to the Conference USA semifinals once again. North Texas ended the season with a national ITA ranking of No. 68 and tallied wins over No. 36 Oklahoma and No. 59 UT Arlington throughout the season.

Senior Anastasiya Shestakova earned the Most Valuable Player award after being named to her third all-conference team in three seasons with North Texas. Fellow senior Agustina Valenzuela took the team’s Catalina Cruz Spirit Award, and senior Kamilla Galieva came away with awards for strength/conditioning and academic excellence.

Freshmen rounded out the remaining two honorees as Laura Arciniegas took the team’s Most Improved Player recognition, and Tamuna Kutubidze was named the team’s player to watch after a First Team All-C-USA selection that saw her tie for a team-high 13 dual wins.

The six team awards are voted on by North Texas coaches, players and support staff from the strength and academic departments.
