Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers to host regional conference

UNT’s Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers will host the Regional Leadership Development Conference April 24-26 at UNT for the first time. The conference will feature workshops and training in communication, ethics, networking, business leadership and other skills necessary in the engineering field.

“Our chapter of the society is only five years old, so this is a big step for us,” said Jacob Acosta, president of UNT’s Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. “Nothing but good things can come from the conference, and it also brings a lot of attention to UNT’s College of Engineering.”

The UNT chapter will host students and professionals from Region 5 of the organization, which includes chapters from Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee.

“One of the goals of the conference is developing student leaders for the society,” said Acosta.

Leadership of each chapter of the society rotates at the end of every school year. The workshops and professional environment at the conference will help cultivate the next round of student leaders, Acosta said.

The conference is sponsored by several companies looking for full time and internship candidates. Companies already confirmed to send representatives include IBM, USAA, Bell Helicopter, Sandia National Laboratories and the U.S. Navy.

Around 250 people will attend the regional conference, which will provide networking opportunities for attendees, according to Acosta.

Non-member registration is $60 and is open until the end of the conference, April 26.
