Mean Green Soccer Looking To Make History On Friday Night

Nov. 12, 2015

LUBBOCK – The North Texas soccer team is looking to make history when the Mean Green faces Texas Tech on Friday night at 7 p.m. in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Mean Green is making its fourth appearance in the NCAA Tournament; the first since 2012. North Texas is playing a rematch of the 2012 game when it faced Texas Tech in Lubbock. Seven seniors from the current team played in the 2012 game when the Red Raiders defeated the Mean Green, 2-0.

A win in Friday’s game would give not only the soccer program its first NCAA win; it would also be the first win for any North Texas team in a head-to-head matchup in an NCAA tournament bracket.

North Texas is also looking to score its first goal in an NCAA Tournament game. The Mean Green has been shut out by scores of 2-0, 3-0 and 3-0 in the last three tournament games.

North Texas head coach John Hedlund is also close to hitting another milestone in his career. He is one win away from 300 career victories. His overall record in 21 years at the helm of Mean Green soccer stands at 299-114-26. If North Texas was to win on Friday, Hedlund would become the 19th active Division I head coach to achieve 300 wins. The 299 wins is the most victories for any head coach in North Texas athletics history.
