What are the different types of programs I can do through Study Abroad?
Study Abroad offers semester, summer, & year-long options, as well as wintermester & shorter-term programs. You can go with one of the many faculty-led program with your professor & your class to another country to study. You can go with an affiliate provider who makes all the arrangements for you. You can participate in one of our reciprocal exchanges with a partner university in over 35 countries. Or you can do an internship or volunteer abroad.
How do I know if my classes will count?
Part of the process is getting your classes pre-approved before you go so you’ll know how the credit counts toward your degree. When you apply for a program, you see a list of things you need to do & the Pre-Approval of Classes is one of them.
How do I schedule an appointment with an advisor?
First, you need to attend a Study Abroad 101 session! Then, come by our office in Sage Hall, 236 & speak with the front desk; or call us at 940-565-2207.
If my faculty-led program cancels, do I get my money back?
Yes, if we have to cancel a program, we will refund any monies that you have paid us.
If I drop my program, do I get my application fee back?
Our application charges are non-refundable, unless we cancel the program.

Can I study in Alaska or Hawaii through Study Abroad?
Study in the USA, including U.S. territories, is handled by the National Student Exchange office, which is housed in the Honors College. Their website is: http://honors.unt.edu/
Where can I find out how much financial aid I’ll receive on my program?
Financial Aid has a designated coordinator for study abroad students – email specialprograms@unt.edu to ask them a question about your aid.
Where can I get graduation attire that is specific to my study abroad experience?
Visionwear International (www.visionwear.com) sells various international items, including country-specific graduation stoles (about $30 each). You can even order a stole with 2 countries on it!
Can I study abroad in my first semester at UNT?
You must attend UNT for at least one semester before you are eligible to study abroad. This applies to freshman as well as transfer students.
What are the GPA requirements to study abroad?
All students who study abroad are required to be in "good standing" with the university.
(At the end of the first term of enrollment at UNT, the minimum GPA requirement is 1.8. In each subsequent term of enrollment, the minimum GPA requirement is 2.0.)
Faculty-led programs may have differing GPA requirements; check the program brochure for more information.
Affiliated programs will have their own GPA requirements, which you must meet in order to participate in their programs.
Most exchange programs require a 2.75; but some require a 3.0.
What other requirements are there to study abroad besides GPA?
Faculty-led programs may have course prerequisites, which you must have before you can participate.
Exchange programs require junior status (60 hours). In some cases, second-semester sophomores can study abroad with a 3.0 GPA.
Affiliated providers will have their own requirements, often including an academic reference and a disciplinary clearance form.
I have a disability (blind, deaf, mobility, psychiatric, learning, etc.) and will need special accommodations, how do I request these?
All students requesting disability accommodations must first be approved and registered with the UNT Office of Disability Accommodation by following these procedures:
