Marginas Earns Academic All-District Honors

(11/15/01) - A standout outside hitter on the North Texas volleyball team, Corina Marginas (Brasov, Romania) was named to the 2001 First Team Verizon Academic All-District VI volleyball team.

Just a sophomore, this is the first year Marginas has been eligible to receive the honor.  She carries a 4.0 GPA and was recently named to the All-Sun Belt Conference First Team for the second straight season after being named the Sun Belt Player of the Week twice and leading the league in kills (567) over the regular season.  Marginas was named Sun Belt Freshman of the Year last season.

She led the Mean Green with a school-record 596 kills this season.  She became only the second player in North Texas history to record over 1,000 kills for a career and ranks No. 1 on the school’s all-time list with 1,050 to her credit.  She was the fastest player in the history of the program to reach 500 and 1,000 kills.  Marginas registered a school-record 38 kills in a single match this year (vs. Denver), which also ties the third most in Sun Belt history.  She led the league in 30-kill matches (3), 20-kill matches (14) and kills per game (4.67kpg).  She ranked ninth in hitting percentage (.287), seventh in digs per game (2.94) and is tied for the most double-double’s (14) in the regular season.

With two years of eligibility left, Marginas already holds two of the top three spots at North Texas for kills in a season (No. 1 and No. 3) and four of top 10 records for kills in a single match.  Her team-best 361 digs this season ranks second on the school’s single-season list.

The 2001 Verizon  Academic All-America Team will be announced December 10.
