Red Wolves Defeat Mean Green Volleyball, 3-0




 DENTON, Texas (11/14/08) The Red Wolves ended the Mean Green’s conference tournament hopes as the Arkansas State volleyball team defeated North Texas, 3-0, on Friday night at the Mean Green Volleyball Center. ASU took the three sets by scores of 28-26, 25-20 and 25-18.

 

The Red Wolves improve to 21-10 overall and 10-7 in the West Division, while the Mean Green falls to 6-24 and 4-13 in the division. With the victory, ASU mathematically eliminated North Texas from advancing to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. NT needed to defeat both ASU and Arkansas-Little Rock on Sunday in order to make the tournament.

 

North Texas held a 25-24 lead in the first set, but two Mean Green service errors handed the victory to the Red Wolves. The momentum swung over to ASU, and the visitors took the next two sets.

 

Charlyn Ursell led the Red Wolves with 12 kills, while Sarah Schoenecke paced the Mean Green with eight. The Mean Green was dominant at the net, posting 11 team blocks. Marelle Lepmets dished out 25 assists for the Mean Green and helped out at the net with six block assists.

 

Amy Huddleston contributed a nice line, posting six kills on 18 attempts with one error for a .278 attack percentage. She defended her side with three solo blocks.

 

Arkansas State posted an overall attack percentage of .224, compared to NT’s .128. The Mean Green held the edge in the first set (.182 to .171) but was unable to come up with the first victory.

 

North Texas closes out its 2008 season with a Sunday match against Arkansas-Little Rock at 1 pm at the Mean Green Volleyball Center.
