Record Crowd Cheers VB Into West Division Title

Box Score

DENTON, Texas - In front of the largest crowd in North Texas volleyball history, the Mean Green swept Denver on Friday to clinch a share of the Sun Belt West Division title, 25-23, 25-28, 25-22.

North Texas (19-12, 11-5 SBC West) hit .292 in dispatching the Pioneers (14-17, 8-8 SBC West) behind a Senior Night standing-room only crowd of 697, which bid farewell to Amy Huddleston, Roxana Casvean, Brittani Youman, Kristin Petrasic and Kelsey Robins.

NT can clinch the West Division outright with an Arkansas State loss to Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday night in Jonesboro. ASU will likely be NT's opponent in the first round of the Sun Belt Tournament on Nov. 18, but it could be either as the No. 4 or No. 5 seeds.

ASU owns the tiebreaker over the Mean Green because of a 5-4 advantage in sets won between the two teams this year, but a Red Wolves loss would make the Mean Green the No. 4.

Huddleston started the match with a pair of service aces, and NT didn't look back in the first set. The Mean Green put its foot on the accelerator in the second frame, forcing a sideout on 77 percent of Denver's attacks.

The Pioneers led for much of the third set until Huddleston tied it up at 16 apiece in the midst of a 7-0 Mean Green run. A pair of Denver timeouts couldn't stop NT from taking a 19-16 advantage and the match.

Huddleston and Rachelle Wilson led the NT offense with 10 kills, and Sarah Willey picked up a match-high 12 digs. Kayla Saey piled up 39 assists on the day.
