Prokof Leads Mean Green Past UNO, 3-1

NEW ORLEANS, La. (10/29/04) -- Freshman outside hitter Katy Prokof recorded a career-high 18 kills while hitting a match-high .368 to lead the North Texas volleyball team to a 3-1 (30-25, 24-30, 30-26, 30-25) victory over New Orleans in a Sun Belt Conference West Division match Friday night.

Prokof’s 18 kills were a match high and she also added 14 digs to pick up her fourth double-double of the season. Anne Pope also came up big for North Texas, finishing with a career-best 17 kills to give her 722 for her career and move her into 10th place all-time at North Texas in the stat.

After UNO defeated NT earlier this season at the Snake Pit, the Mean Green salvaged a split in the regular-season series. Not only that, the victory moves the Mean Green into no worse than a tie for third place in the West Division with New Orleans as both teams hold a 4-6 league record. Denver entered Friday’s play with a 4-5 conference record.

The Mean Green hit .214 and recorded 63 kills, its most for a four-game match this season. North Texas hit over .300 in two games, including a match-high .413 in the final contest. NT finished strong with 22 kills on 46 attempts with just three errors in the fourth game.

While New Orleans had four players register double-figure kills, North Texas held the Privateers to a .145 attack percentage. Jennifer Cruz led all UNO players with 15 kills.

Heidi Johnson ran the North Texas offense efficiently, handing out a match-high 56 assists. The sophomore setter’s 56 assists were the second most of her career and she also tallied 12 digs to collect her team-best seventh double-double of the season. Freshman libero Jessica Hulsebosch recorded at least 20 digs in a match for the fourth time this season, finishing with a match-high 22. She now has 320 digs for the year, the 10th most ever for a North Texas player in a single season.

North Texas snapped a six-match skid with the victory and won its first four-game match of the season. The Mean Green will go for its first winning streak of the season Sunday when it plays at South Alabama in a 1 p.m. match.
