Mean Green Remains In First Place WIth Win Over ASU

Box Score

DENTON (10/27/06) The lights of the Mean Green Village shone squarely on the North Texas volleyball team Friday night, and the team did not disappoint as they avenged an earlier loss to Arkansas State to remain in a tie for first place in the Sun Belt West with a 3-2 (30-19, 31-33, 31-29, 21-30, 15-12) win over the Lady Indians.

After splitting the first two games, the Mean Green (18-11, 9-4) trailed 29-24 in game three before Ashley Bass stepped to the service line. Bass served out a seven-point rally that was aided by three Katy Prokof kills as the Mean Green took the game.

The Mean Green had trouble containing Jessalyn Payne and Robin Aaron for the Lady Indians (17-12, 8-5) who combined for 39 kills between them. Payne finished with a game-high 20 kills.

Prokof finished with 19 kills for NT, only two shy of her season high. Brittney Gregory continues to produce in her final season and added 14 kills and four blocks for the night.

Brooke Engel got her serve back to form in the first two games, putting in seven aces in that span after not picking up a single ace in Denver on Monday.

North Texas and Denver now share first place after the Pioneers knocked off Arkansas-Little Rock Friday night.

The Mean Green will take on the Trojans for the second time this season on Sunday at 1p.m.  North Texas swept UALR in the first meeting in Little Rock.
