Volleyball Holds On For Five-Set Win

DENTON, Texas - The North Texas volleyball team went up 2-0 in a hurry, and hung on tight in a five-set thriller win over Troy on Friday night (25-18, 25-19, 24-26, 21-25, 15-8).

The Mean Green (16-9, 8-2 Sun Belt West) allowed the Trojans (10-15, 2-6 Sun Belt East) back into the match after rolling the first two sets. NT rose to the occasion in the deciding set, hitting .353 in the fifth frame to keep its Sun Belt West Division lead at two matches over Arkansas State.

Amy Huddleston led all players with 19 kills for NT, which logged a 66-49 edge in kills over the Trojans. Troy hit .125 overall in the match, but was held to -.083 hitting in the fifth set.

NT opened the match with a 4-0 run and extended that lead to 14-2 after a Brittani Youman kills. Troy wouldn't lead again until the third set after North Texas went on to dominate the second.

Four Mean Green players reached double-figure digs led by Sarah Willey's match-high 19. Shelley Morton wasn't far behind with 16, while Kristin Petrasic and Chrissy Johnson logged 11 and 10 respectively. With her performance tonight, Willey moved into third place in school history in career digs with her 1,151st.

North Texas returns to action on Sunday against South Alabama at the Mean Green Volleyball Center at 1 p.m.
