Volleyball Returns Home For Two Matches This Week

DENTON (10/20/05) - The North Texas volleyball team looks to get back on the winning track with two home matches this week, including a non-conference matchup tonight against Oral Roberts at the Snake Pit at 7 pm.

After starting Sun Belt Conference play 2-0, North Texas dropped its next four league matches and is now 2-4. The Mean Green dropped two road matches against the Sun Belt East Division leaders in Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee last week, but still remains tied for second place in the West Division (two matches behind Denver).

North Texas ends an extended stretch on the road this week, playing two home matches at the Snake Pit. The Mean Green played 12 of its last 13 matches on the road, but now gets set for a nice home stand to close out the regular season. NT will host six of its final nine regular-season matches, starting with Oral Roberts on Thursday and Sun Belt Conference foe Florida International on Sunday. ORU will be the Mean Green’s final non-conference opponent of the regular season, while FIU is in fourth place in the East Division with a 3-4 Sun Belt record.

North Texas is 4-14 against Oral Roberts since the two teams met for the first time in 1979. The Mean Green and Golden Eagles have met each of the last two seasons and are 1-1 in those matches. ORU defeated the Mean Green 3-0 on their homecourt last season, while NT captured a 3-1 win in 2003 in Denton.

North Texas and FIU have played each other six times, all as Sun Belt Conference opponents. The Golden Panthers hold a 4-2 advantage in the series, including one victory in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament (2001). The Mean Green fell to FIU 3-0 last year at the Snake Pit (all three losses were by three points or less), but both meetings in 2002 and 2003.
