Weekend Match Notes

TROY, Ala. – The North Texas volleyball team is a combined 4-0 against Troy and South Alabama in the Ken Murczek era, but don’t tell that to the Mean Green. The Trojans and the Jaguars are two of the hottest teams in the Sun Belt right now, and both have NT’s full attention this weekend.

In fact, Troy has won four of its last five and features veteran setter Alexandra Alexander, who ranks second in the SBC with 11.29 assists per set in league play. USA boasts one of the league’s top serves, as Melissa Waelter leads the SBC with nine aces in 21 sets of Sun Belt play (.43 SAPS).

This weekend will mark the midway point of Sun Belt play, and North Texas is within a match of Sun Belt West Division leader UALR. The Trojans knocked off the Mean Green in Little Rock last month, but NT will host a rematch in the regular season finale on Nov. 11. UALR dropped a four-set match to Troy over the weekend, which makes NT’s meeting at Troy that much more significant.

A possible 20-win season is on the line for the Mean Green as well. NT still has 10 regular season matches and the Sun Belt Tournament remaining, but its 18 wins already qualify it for one of the best seasons in school history. Only five teams in NT history have ever reached 20 wins, and Murczek can become just the second NT coach to score a pair of 20-win seasons. The 2012 squad still has a shot at the school record of 26 wins put up by the 1977 team.
