Mean Green Volleyball Claims Share Of Tournament Championship




CHARLOTTE, N.C. (9/17/05) -- The North Texas volleyball team (5-10) split its final two matches at the Spring Hill Suites Classic on Saturday to finish in a three-way tie for the tournament championship with Charlotte and Winthrop. The Mean Green defeated Charlotte (5-9) 3-1 in its first match of the day before falling 3-1 to Winthrop (8-4) in its late match.

The Mean Green shared the tournament title with Charlotte and Winthrop with a 3-1 record at the tournament, marking the first time since 2003 that North Texas has won a tournament championship. NT’s 30-27, 30-27, 27-30, 30-25 victory over Charlotte gave it a season high three-match winning streak.

Tara Hooser finished the match with 15 kills to lead three North Texas players with double-figure kills. As a team, the Mean Green recorded 55 kills on a .244 attack percentage, while Charlotte finished with 78 kills on a .249 hitting percentage.

The Mean Green took the first game against Winthrop, 30-26, but dropped the next three by scores of 25-30, 20-30, 27-30. North Texas had 47 kills and was limited to a .109 attack percentage. Winthrop, on the other hand, finished with 72 kills and a .232 hitting percentage.

Katy Prokof had a team-high 13 kills in the match, giving her double-figure kills in every outing at the tournament. Prokof and Catherine Coffey were named to the all-tournament team.

North Texas returns to action on Tuesday at Northwestern State at 7 p.m. before hosting Louisiana-Lafayette on Friday in its first Sun Belt Conference match of the year.
