North Texas Game Notes

DENTON, Texas – After a 4-0 weekend that saw the North Texas volleyball team win its first ever home tournament, the Mean Green can still make history at cross-town rival UT Arlington on Tuesday night at 6 p.m.

North Texas has never started a season with five straight wins, a feat NT can topple with a victory over the Mavericks, who picked up wins over Savannah State and UT Pan American in hosting their own tournament over the weekend.

UT Arlington, a Southland Conference member in 2011, has been tabbed to finish eighth in the 10-team Western Athletic Conference. The Mavericks will move to the Sun Belt Conference in 2012.

NT’s top attacking threat, Courtney Windham, earned tournament MVP honors after posting 3.91 kills and 1.82 blocks per set, while hitting .337 on the weekend. She tallied 13 kills in three sets against UMKC, and racked up at least five blocks in three of the four matches. Windham’s four solo blocks are only four shy of her entire 2011 total.

NT has something offensively in 2012 it hasn’t had in years – options. NT had six players with at least 1.55 kills per set over the weekend, which shows that NT was able to spread the opposing defense thin. The result? A team attack percentage of .230 (well higher than last year’s .175) and a kills per set edge of 12.42 – 9.42 over its opponents.
