Volleyball Nets AVCA Team Academic Award

DENTON, Texas - North Texas volleyball was named one of 91 Division I teams to receive the AVCA Team Academic Award for its efforts during the 2010-11 school year. This is the first time Mean Green volleyball has received the award in school history.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

"When I got the job here at North Texas, I talked with the girls and we set this standard for our team," said head coach Ken Murczek. " Hats off to the girls, they did a great job both in the classroom and on the court and have really understood what it means to be a true student-athlete."

Only three other Sun Belt teams, Arkansas State, UALR and Western Kentucky, received the award.

The Mean Green volleyball team posted one of the best seasons in school history in 2010. North Texas won a share of the Sun Belt West Division title and finished the season with a record of 20-13, which is just the fifth 20-win campaign ever for a Mean Green squad.

North Texas will kick off the 2011 season on Friday, August 26, against Lamar in Beaumont, Texas.
