Volleyball Opens Spring Season With Three Wins At UTA Tournament

DENTON, Texas (3/29/10) - The North Texas volleyball team picked up three wins at the UTA Tournament this past Saturday in the Mean Green's first action of the spring.

Under new head coach Ken Murczek, the Mean Green went 3-1 in the tournament with wins against UTA, Houston and UTSA. NT's only loss came at the hands of Oklahoma, who played in the NCAA Tournament last year.

"Both Sarah Willey and Kelsey Robins anchored our backcourt serve receive and defense throughout the day, while sophomore setter Kayla Saey did a fantastic job distributing the ball to hot hitters Amy Huddleston and middle blocker Rachelle Wilson," said Murczek. "The girls demonstrated great effort and execution throughout the day."

Murczek took over the reins of the North Texas volleyball program in January, and brings a pedigree of winning at every level of competition. The former Kansas and Virginia assistant coach won national championships as a player at Arizona, and played professionally in Europe.

The Mean Green is slated to return over 90 percent of its kills from last year's squad, including one of the program's all-time top attackers in Amy Huddleston.

North Texas continues its spring season on April 10th at SMU.
