DENTON - It’s been exactly one year since senior Carnae Dillard won the Sports Imports/AVCA DI National Player of the Week award. Now, 365 days later, the nation’s leader in kills picks up another country-wide honor - espnW’s National Player of the Week.

The award comes after the outside hitter broke the program’s career kills record last week. At 2,260 kills, that mark not only leads the North Texas record books, but it is the highest career total among any active volleyball player in the nation.

She had 26 kills and 12 digs in a heartbreaking five-set loss to Florida Atlantic last Friday, but she followed that up with another 26-kill, 13-dig performance that was good enough to take down FIU in four sets. On the weekend, Dillard picked up her 21st double-double of the season as she continues to turn heads.

This is the first time a Mean Green student-athlete has garnered such an award from ESPN. With the honor, Dillard has now been recognized with two national weekly awards in the last two seasons. Before that, it had been eight years since a North Texas volleyball player was recognized for a national weekly honor.

As perhaps the most talked-about individual player in Conference USA, Dillard and the Mean Green enter their last weekend of regular season action in matches against Middle Tennessee and UTSA. As if it’s not the case already, the spotlight will be solely on Dillard as she is honored at the team’s senior night, taking place prior to the 6 p.m. opening serve of Thursday’s contest.
