DENTON, Texas– Several North Texas student-athletes and a Mean Green staff member were recognized at the University Honor’s Day last Friday.
Senior volleyball player Courtney Windham was named the outstanding female athlete award winner, while Zach Orr was named the outstanding male varsity athlete award recipient. This award is given to a senior athlete who excels on and off the field.
Windham, a communication studies major with a minor in social science, served as president of Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C.) and received the 2013-14 C-USA Fall Spirit of Service award. The senior was named to two regular season all-tournament teams and finished the year hitting .313 and averaging 1.22 blocks per set.
Orr was named to the 2013 Conference USA Football All-Academic team and the Capital One Academic All-District VII squad after posting a 3.41 GPA in kinesiology. The senior linebacker was a first-team All-CUSA pick as he led North Texas in tackles for the third straight season with 114.
Six student-athletes were named to the Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. This award section honors students who demonstrate collegiate leadership through the balance of both academic excellence and extracurricular involvement.
Franziska Sprinkmeyer, Kelsey Hodges, Allison Guderian, Haley Riley, Kylee Kittrell and Sarida Muslow all received this honor. Sprinkmeyer is a junior on the tennis team, while Hodges, Guderian and Riley are all soccer players. Kittrell is sophomore track athlete, and Muslow is a senior on the swimming and diving team.
Delia Covo, a 2013 graduate and former swimmer, was recognized after being appointed to a teaching position in San Antonio as part of the Teach for America program.
Hank Dickenson, the deputy athletics director at North Texas, received the Bob Rogers Service and Community Engagement Award. This award was created to recognize a faculty or staff member who bridges the best of the North Texas community with the Denton community through volunteerism and community engagement. This may be expressed through a dedicated craft, passion or talent enjoyed by each community and used to build/bridge community; however, the distinct and required characteristic of the recipient is a genuine attitude of selfless service, kindness and joy which was the hallmark of Bob Rogers.
For more than half a century—since 1950—the University of North Texas has observed the tradition of coming together each academic year to honor our most accomplished and distinguished students, faculty, and staff. Honors Day is an important event in the life of the institution.
