Track's Wiggins Opens ISU Classic With Finals Berth




AMES, Iowa (2/10/06) In one of the largest fields of the season, newcomer Lauren Wiggins scorched her way into the finals of the 60-meter hurdles at the Iowa State Indoor Classic.

 

Wiggins, racing in a field of 78 athletes, won her heat with the ninth best qualifying time of 8.63 seconds and will compete in the finals on Saturday afternoon. The freshman set the school record in the 60-meter hurdles last week in her first collegiate attempt with a time of 8.52.

 

Senior Ciji Brooks also fared well in the 60 hurdles, finishing 26th in time of 8.93.

 

200-meter dash sprinters Chi Chi Echebelem and Kelvin Wright both made their marks in the meet’s largest contingents of runners. Echebelem, in a field of 135 sprinters, finished 36 in a time of 25.20, while Wright, competing against 140 athletes, notched 45th place in 22.25.

 

The Mean Green will be back in action tomorrow in the final day of competition in the ISU Classic.
