(2/9/08) The North Texas track team set one school record and tallied three first place finishes in its final tune-up meet before the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships, Feb 23-24.

“We had some good individual performances, but overall, I think we came out a little flat,” said North Texas head coach Rick Watkins. “We had a good hard week of practice and our legs were just too tired. We tried to have everyone compete in the event that they’d be running in at the conference meet, so I think that will help benefit us in the long run.”

One week after Lauren Wiggins set a school record in the 60-meter hurdles, teammate Ciara Smith followed suite with a school record of her own. Smith recorded a time of 55.13 in the 400-meter dash, placing second in the event. The time was a full second-and-a-half faster than Smith’s previous season best. As if one school record wasn’t enough, Smith aimed for her second record of the day in the 200-meter dash. The sophomore from Round Rock finished second in the 200 dash with a personal-best time of 24.45; just four-hundredth of a second off the school record.

Brandi Stanfield and Lauren Wiggins were the other two Mean Green woman to pick up a first place finish in their respective event. Stanfield recorded a leap of 40-08.25 to take home the gold. Stanfield, the defending two-time indoor conference champion has cleared the 40 foot mark in all four of her meets so far this season. Wiggins, a junior from Carrollton, earned first place and set a school record in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.95. It is the third consecutive week that Wiggins has set a school record in the hurdles. She had set the 60-meter hurdles record twice already before etching her name into the Mean Green record books in th 55-meters.

Temitayo Harriman led the Mean Green men during the one-day meet in Lubbock. Competing for the first time this season, Harriman posted a first place finish in the 800-meter run, finishing with a time of 1:53.97. The mark is over four seconds faster than the previous team best in the event.

“Temitayo (Harriman) wanted to run last week, but he wasn’t feeling well and just wasn’t at 100 percent,” Watkins said. “To have a shot at conference, we’re really going to need to pick up some points in the distance events, and he’ll have a large say in that once he’s feeling healthy.”
