DENTON – Four North Texas student-athletes and the Mean Green women’s track & field team earned all-academic honors for the 2014-15 season announced recently by the USTFCCCA.

Shahaf Bareni, Connor Bey, Collin Heard and Kedron Sowells were named to the all-academic team individually.

“It’s always an honor to have our kids be represented as student-athletes,” said head coach Carl Sheffield. “We believe that the athletes that excel on the track should also perform in the classroom. When we have those students recognized, it’s always exciting.”

Rising senior Connor Bey, a computer science major from Celina, Texas, posted a 3.96 GPA and is a two-time C-USA all-academic team honoree. Bey was a part of the sixth place 4x400 meter relay team at the C-USA Indoor Championships. He also competed at the NCAA West Preliminaries on the 4x400M relay team.

Bareni majored in kinesiology and held a 3.703 grade point average. In addition to her academic success, Bareni has excelled as a high jumper. Bareni placed first in the 2015 C-USA Indoor Championships high jump with a 1.79m jump and competed at the NCAA West Preliminaries.

Heard qualified for the outdoor track and field west preliminary round in the 200 meters and was part of the 4X400M relay team.

Sowells had a 3.273 GPA and was an alternate on the 4X400 meter relay team at the west preliminary round.

“One of my personal goals after taking over as head coach was to improve the academic progress of our track & field teams,” said Sheffield. “We have demonstrated that we believe in that goal. Our women’s team for the second year in a row has eclipsed the 3.00 GPA mark making them an all-academic team.”

To qualify for USTFCCCA all-academic honors, a team must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. For individuals, a student-athlete must have a GPA at least 3.25 and have been ranked in the top 96 nationally for the indoor season, ranked in the top 48 in a relay event, or have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I outdoor championships.

“We are extremely excited for our academic advisor and his support team that has helped us reach this recognition,” said Sheffield. “We are all very proud of the accomplishment.”
