DENTON--Conference USA has awarded Kedron Sowells the Winter Spirit of Service Award. Sowells is one of 14 athletes to receive this honor for the 2014-15 winter sports season.

The awardees are chosen based on significant community service, good academic standing, and participation in their elected sport. This is Sowell's second time to be selected for the Spirit of Service Award.

"It is an honor to receive such recognition," said Sowells. "There are so many great things in our community and I am truly thankful to be chosen. I believe service is one of my gifts and I will never stop!"

In his three years at North Texas, Sowells has been able to establish and maintain a winter garment drive, where along with the help of his teammates, especially SAAC officers Connor Bey and Chastity Stewart, he collected gently used winter garments to hand out to the homeless.

The team collected a total of 300 winter garments, many more than in the two years prior. The track team partnered with the Hyatt Regency of Dallas and local non-profit Fire and Ice to provide the homeless with food, hygiene bags, and additional winter garments to ensure the homeless would be safe and warm in the upcoming winter months.

Sowells continues to serve as SAAC president and maintains a 3.45 GPA. He also earned the Arthur Ashe Jr. Award this fall for his involvement in the community, classroom, and dedication to his sport.
