AUSTIN -- Led by inspired performances from the senior class, the North Texas track and field teams made a splash at the 89th Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays March 30-April 2.

Competing in front of 43,085 total spectators throughout the four day meet didn’t seem to faze the Mean Green. Senior Bryce McAndrew improved his finish and mile time from a year ago with a third-place finish at a career-best time of 4:01.28. Classmate Troy Taylor led for most of the race before dropping back to 11th with a respectable time of 4:13.20.

On Friday, April 1, North Texas earned its second podium finish of the meet after the distance medley relay team of four seniors, Taylor, Connor Bey, Alexander Hita and McAndrew running the anchor leg at 9:53.60, the second fastest time in school history.

Senior Eddie Wilcox picked up his fifth first-place finish (three in indoors, second in outdoors) in the men’s high jump “B” section jumping 2.14 meters (7-0.75 feet).

“It’s always a great accomplishment to have quality performances in such a high caliber competition,” head coach Carl Sheffield said. “Some of the best performances in the U.S. were set this weekend. Ngozi Nweke had an outstanding discus competition in her primary event. Bryce McAndrew had two awesome performances with the mile run Saturday evening and capping off the distance medley relay on Friday night after a two-hour rain delay.”

In the women’s 400 meter hurdles, senior Chastity Stewart ran a season-best time of 59.10 finishing 10th in the preliminaries. Stewart fell just short of qualifying for the finals and was only two seconds from her school record time of 57.74.

In the 100m hurdles, Stewart again fell just short of qualifying with a 12th place finish at 13.64 seconds.

The Mean Green finished short in the women’s 4x100-meter relay preliminaries as the team of Stewart, senior Nadiyah El-Amin, junior Jazmine Martin and senior Mona Landry touched in at 45.80 for 10th place.

“Chastity had missed qualifying for the 400m hurdles by one place and the 100m hurdles by two places, and narrowly missing the 4x100m relay by one spot,” added Sheffield.

Senior Tori Clark set a personal best in the women’s hammer throw after a first attempt mark of 54.36 meters (178-04 feet) to finish 14th. Classmate Ngozi Nweke placed eighth in the discus with a throw on her final attempt of 45.06 meters (147-10 feet).

“Our seniors are seasoned competitors when it comes to performing at a very high level,” said Sheffield. “This meet was very important for leading our teams in our conference and championship seasons later this spring.”
