Mean Green Tennis Competes at Houston Tournament

DENTON, TX (11/02/06) The North Texas tennis team travels to Houston this weekend to compete in the last tournament of the fall season against teams such as New Mexico State, Air Force and Houston.

“We have had a lot of fun this fall,” said head coach Sujay Lama. “The girls have worked hard and taken a lot of steps forward.”

The tennis team had a good start this fall season. During the Mean Green Invitational on September 22nd, three of the four North Texas players and both doubles teams made it to the final draw on the first day. Unfortunately, the team was disappointed with the outcome of the Texas Tech tournament on September 29th after they were unsuccessful at making it to the final draw.

During the ITA Tennis Regionals, held October 19th at TCU, senior Megan Schmulbach and junior Idalina Franca both made it past the qualifying rounds and onto the Main Draw of Finals.

“These past few weeks we have worked really hard at getting our game back on track,” said Lama. “We would like to finish this fall on a nice note.”

Senior Megan Schmulbach is looking forward to the upcoming tournament as a stepping stone for the spring season.

“This tournament is different than most fall tournaments,” said Schmulbach. “It is set up like a dual this time which is how the tournaments are in the spring. It’s going to be a lot of fun and I think a good indication of how we will do in the spring.”
