Mean Green Tennis? Fall Season Comes To A Close

DENTON (10/20/03) -- The North Texas women’s tennis team wrapped up its third and final fall tournament of the fall season last weekend, competing at the ITA Southwest Regionals in Fort Worth, Tex.

North Texas took six of its eight players to the tournament and all six competed in singles and doubles competition. Kelli Royer, knocked out of the second singles consolation bracket in the round of 16 on Sunday, brought the tournament to a close for North Texas. Royer led the Mean Green over the weekend with two victories, Ashley Sammis and Ingrid Stockinger picked up first round victories as well.

In doubles, Krysta Lee and Royer picked up a victory in the first round of 64 to advance to the second round before falling 8-5 to Texas Tech’s Brooks and Tereschenko. Katherine Harris and Megan Schmulbach notched a doubles victory in the first round of the consolation bracket.

The Mean Green competed at the Lady Razorbacks Invitational to open the 2003-04 season and also played in the Cougar Fall Classic Oct. 3-5.

Royer led North Texas in the spring, picking up five victories. Megan Schmulbach and Ingrid Stockinger followed Royer with three victories each. Although they competed in just one tournament, Holly Lee and Sammis led North Texas in doubles through the fall schedule with a 3-0 record and flight E championship at the Cougar Fall Classic.

The Mean Green will begin play in the fall on Jan. 31, hosting Sam Houston State at 1 p.m. Three different North Texas players competed against a member of the SHSU team during the fall, finishing with a 2-1 record. The Mean Green went 1-0 in doubles against the Bearkats during its three fall tournaments.
