DENTON, Texas (10/14/07) - North Texas Tennis finished out the North Texas Challenge with victories in both singles and doubles today at the Waranch Tennis Center.

In singles, Shannon McKenzie had a 2-0 victory over teammate Ashley Akin. Idalina Franca had default victory over Cristina Oliveira from Midwestern State University.

“I felt the tournament was a good practice for our games. Everyone did what they were supposed to do and played well,” said Franca. “I think we had the chance to improve.”

Other victories go to the team of Franca and Sammie Moreton who concurred in doubles with an 8-3 victory over teammates Akin and McKenzie.

“We had a very successful tournament. I feel it was a good opportunity to practice under pressure. Everyone played well and I think everyone will go home happy,” said Moreton.

The rest of the Mean Green tennis team competed this weekend in Midland, Texas, where Amy Joubert and Madura Ranganathan advanced to the doubles semifinals. The NT duo faced off against a Pepperdine squad that had seen national rankings this season, and took the match to a tie break. But in the end, the Pepperdine duo of Kosakovski and Bandwe was too strong, knocking off the Mean Green, 9-8 (7-5).

"This weekend was a great experience for out team with the high level of competition, and it will help get us ready for regionals next week," said North Texas head coach Sujay Lama.

The North Texas Tennis team will have their next shot at victory during the Oct. 17-21 weekend where they will compete in the ITA Regional in Lubbock, Texas.
