Tennis Sends Five To Finals Of North Texas Challenge

DENTON, Texas (10/13/07) - The North Texas tennis team placed five players in the finals of the North Texas Challenge, posting a record of 3-1 in singles and 2-0 in doubles today.

 

The Mean Green doubles' teams continued their winning streak at Waranch Tennis Center. The doubles team of Idalina Franca and Sammie Moreton remain undefeated in the tournament with an 8-4 victory over Tarleton State University opponents, while Ashley Akin and Shannon McKenzie also went undefeated over North Central Texas College opponents, 8-6.

 

Akin, McKenzie and Franca picked up singles wins. Highlighted victories went to Akin, who defeated Collin County Community College opponent Mandy Bowling 6-0, 6-4 and Franca who defeated Midwestern State University opponent Faye D’Hamecourt 6-2, 6-1.

 

“Our second day was a success once again,” said assistant coach Jeff Maren. “We had to battle the elements today, as well as, stronger opponents. The girls were able to meet the challenge. Our emphasis today was to have solid team work on the court in doubles and support each other in singles.”

 

North Texas is expected to compete in the finals where Akin and McKenzie will go head to head in singles and the doubles teams of Franca and Moreton; Akin and McKenzie will be competing for the championship victory in doubles.
