Sunday Matches Cancelled At Midland Invite

Day Two Article

MIDLAND, Texas (10/12/08) - North Texas had the remainder of its matches cancelled due to rainy conditions on Sunday at the Midland Racquet Club Invitational.

There was the possibility of getting a few main draw matches in for the schools, but North Texas only had back draw matches left so the decision was made to cancel the rest and return to Denton. This was a safety measure for the players.

The Mean Green was set to have action on Sunday including freshman Irina Paraschiv's semifinals back draw match against Nikola Matovivoa of UTA.

Irina's road began with a victory in the round of 16 over Christie Lyles of Texas A&M in dominant fashion (7-5, 6-0). Lyles is considered the Aggies No. 2 singles player and was ranked No. 13 in the Southwest Region.

Irina then beat Varsha Shiva-Shankar of Rice in another stellar straight set victory (6-2, 6-2) to put herself into the semis.

Catalina Cruz of North Texas lost her match to Matovivoa of UT-Arlington in the quarterfinals. The two players battled with Matovivoa winning (7-6, 0-6, 12-10).

The Mean Green should get back to the court next Friday, October 17 in Houston for the 28th Annual Rice Classic.

The results from Friday and Saturday will be posted during the week. Stay tuned to www.meangreensports.com.
