Tennis Defeats LA Tech In Final Season Match




FORT WORTH, Texas (4/14/07) Senior Megan Schmulbach had a positive final season match today when the North Texas tennis team defeated Louisiana Tech 7-0 in their second win of the season. The match was scheduled to take place at the Waranch Tennis Complex in Denton but was moved to Las Colinas Country Club in Irving, Texas due to inclement weather.

 

“I am very proud of the team,” said head coach Sujay Lama. “This was a great win today. Even after all the team has been through this season they are still playing tremendous tennis. The girls are playing the best tennis of the season right now and this win is significant in keeping the team positive going into the Sun Belt Tournament on Friday.”

 

Today’s match marked the final match of the season and the team’s only senior, Megan Schmulbach swept No. singles and doubles today. In singles, Schmulbach defeated Wedderburn 6-1, 7-5. During doubles play, she teamed up with Aziza Aba Butain to defeat Makovska and Gaspar 8-3.

 

Idalina Franca played at No. 2 singles defeating Makovska 6-1, 6-1. Due to injuries of LA Tech players, Franca and Poe were unable to play No. 3 doubles.

 

Aba Butain defeated Gaspar in No. 3 singles today 6-1, 6-3

 

Mary Poe, a sophomore walk-on, defeated Gray in a close match of 7-6, 7-6.

 

Due to injuries of LA Tech players, Hollie Caras and Emi Itabashi were unable to play in No. 5 and 6 singles.

 

Regular season play is over but the North Texas tennis team hosts the Sun Belt Conference Championship the weekend of Friday, April 20 at Waranch Tennis Complex.

 

Waranch Tennis Complex is a 12-court complex and is located at 1499 S. Bonnie Brae and Walt Parker Dr. This $3 million facility is named for University of North Texas alumnus Ronald Waranch. Included in the complex is a clubhouse with a lounge, office spaces and locker rooms.
