NT Tennis Picks Up Second Conference Win Of The Season

DENTON, Texas (2/16/08)- The North Texas tennis team snapped a three match losing streak with a 5-0 win over the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Saturday afternoon.

The victory over the Trojans (6-4) was the second Mean Green (4-4) conference win on the young season.

“The last three matches prepared us well for today,” said head coach Sujay Lama. “We had a sense of calm intensity out there. I liked how aggressive we were and how well we adjusted to playing indoors. This is a nice victory under our belt and we got back the momentum back heading into our two matches next weekend.”

For the first time this season doubles team Madura Ranganathan and Catalina Cruz played together. They came out with a 8-5 victory over UALR’s Anne Weijenborg and Patricia Cortez. Narine Kazarova and Idalin Franca also won their doubles match 8-3.

Madura Ranganathan defeated the Trojans’ Laetitia Bourgeon 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles spot. Ranganathan snapped Bourgeon’s eight match winning streak, and improved Ranganathan’s overall singles record to 6-2. Catalina Cruz, Idalin Franca, and Amy Joubert also picked up wins in singles play over UALR. With the Mean Green up 5-0, the No. 3 and 5 singles matches were not finished.

The Mean Green will next travel to Las Cruces, New Mexico to face New Mexico State on Saturday February 23. The match will begin at noon.
