LUBBOCK, Texas (1/23/09) - The Texas Tech Red Raiders gave the North Texas tennis team its first loss of the season 6-1 on Friday. Samantha Vanderdrift and Kelsy Garland led the way for Tech helping the team win all but one of their matches.

The Mean Green did make the Red Raiders earn the victory by turning in good efforts and battling hard in matches. One of North Texas' best players, Madura Ranganathan, did not play because of the flu.

"We dealt with some adversity tonight," Mean Green head coach Sujay Lama said. "We didn't have our full lineup in there, but I thought we fought hard against a good team like Texas Tech. I saw some things out of our players in the late matches that give us something to build off of."

Narine Kazarova for NT won her match against Natalie Leitch in three sets 6-2, 0-6, 10-7.

Two regionally ranked players squared off from the No. 1 position. No. 14 Irina Paraschiv battled No. 15 Samantha Vanderdrift from Tech in two sets coming up short 5-7, 3-6.

In the No. 2 spot, TTU's Kelsy Garland won over North Texas' Paula Dinuta 6-2, 6-1.

Vanderdrift and Garland also defeated Paraschiv and Dinuta in doubles 8-6.

The Mean Green looks to bounce back against Mississippi State at 5 P.M. tomorrow in Lubbock. These two schools have never met before.
