North Texas Women's Tennis Start the Season Off Strong

DENTON, Texas -

North Texas tennis went 3-0 during the first round of singles at the Midland Invitational this weekend.

Freshman Alexis Thoma took on a Big XII opponent from Texas Tech, while sophomore Kamilla Galieva took on TCU. Agustina Valenzuela dueled with Kansas’ top player in order to advance to the second round.

“Really pleased with the way our ladies competed,” said Lama. “Alexis and Kamilla had great starts in their North Texas career, with solid wins against tough competition.”

In the second round actions, they put up valiant effort and just fell short. Galievea lost to Nikki Sanders of Texas Tech. Thoma went down to Michaela Capannolo of Pepperdine, and Valenzuela fell to Mary Hanna of Nebraska.

Mean Green tennis will return for will return for the upcoming tournament in Las Vegas. The UNLV Invitational will begin on Friday, Sept. 20.

“I am looking forward to having the rest of the team back this week. They were a bit banged up and in need of a little rest. It will be good to get everyone back in action,” Said Coach Lama.

Agustina Valenzuela defeated Kansas’ Belen Ludena, 3-6, 6-2, (1-0)
Kamilla Galieva defeated TCU’s Monika Sirilova, 6-1, 6-2
Alexis Thoma defeated Texas Tech’s Beatriz , 6-3, 6-2
Kseniya Bardabush lost to ACU’s Erin Walker, def. injury

Singles 2nd Round
Agustina Valenzuela lost to Nebraska’s Mary Hanna, 6-2, 6-3
Kamilla Galieva lost to Texas Tech’s Nikki Sanders, 6-1, 6-4
Alexis Thoma lost to Pepperdine’s Michaela Capannolo, 6-3, 7-5
