Houston Out Hustles No. 63 North Texas

Feb. 8, 2014

HOUSTON - The No. 63 North Texas tennis team could not stop the University of Houston Cougars who won 5-0, and picked up their third straight win which leaves them undefeated in 2014.

“We did not get off to a good start today, but I have to give the Houston team credit,” said head coach Sujay Lama. “They were grittier in the big points and came out of the gate with more energy than us, especially in singles.”

In doubles play, the Mean Green duo of Dane Joubert and Anastasiya Shestakova finished first at the No. 3 spot, but could not hold off Houston’s Phillips and Rupert, who won the match 6-1. The Cougars overpowered North Texas at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots earning doubles points.

“We’ll hit the practice courts hard on Monday and keep working to improve on maintaining a good energy level and execution,” Lama said. “ The upcoming match at home should give us a huge boost after being on the road for five straight weekends.”

In singles play, North Texas was not able to stop the Cougars, as they fueled off their doubles victory. Ana Sofia Cordero had a comeback in the second set but it wasn’t enough to hold off Phillips who took the match 6-0, 6-4.

The North Texas tennis team will host the Miami of Ohio at the Warranch Tennis Complex Saturday, Feb. 15, at 11 a.m.
