Swimming Preview Against FIU and Alabama




MIAMI, Florida- As winter sets in, North Texas swimming darts down to the "Sunshine State" to take on FIU and Alabama in Miami, Florida. The Mean Green are coming off a fourth place finish at the Mizzou Invite, bringing home a meet record, 10 new school records, and a new Sun Belt Conference record.

Junior Catia Weickgenant swam in record breaking fashion, overcoming three North Texas school records, a Sun Belt Conference All-Time record, and a Mizzou Invite Meet record. On day one, Weickgenant broke the SBC time in the 500 Free at 4:48.89, passing Denver's Lisa Ginder's previous record of 4:49.03. On day two, she created a top program time of 1:48.75 in the 200 Free, breaking her previous record of 1:49.46 (2/23/11). On day three, the junior also set a new school and Mizzou Invite Meet record by winning the 200 Fly in 2:00.51, passing her own top program time of 2:01.72 (2/23/11). She now holds the second fastest 200 Fly time in the SBC this season.

Freshman Krista Rossum broke four schools records at Mizzou, accumulating a total of six North Texas school records broken during her first semester of college. On day one, Rossum set a new school record in the 200 IM (2:01.85), breaking fellow swimmer Rosa Gentile's 2:04.21 in 2010. On day two of the Invite, her first imprint on the books came in the 400 IM (prelims), finishing in 4:20.79, breaking the previous school time she set at 4:28.05 (11/5/11). Rossum also swam the program's second fastest time with a final's fourth place finish of 4:22.41. Moments later, the Canadian sensation broke Hannah Bakke's school record (1:03.92, 2/28/2008) in the 100 Breast, tapping out at 1:03.30. On day three, the freshman busted her fourth school record of the meet, this time in the 200 Breast. Rossum won the event in 2:14.84, breaking her previous program record of 2:18.36 on October 22, 2011.

The 400 Medley Relay team (Groteguth, Rossum, Gentile, Weickgenant) topped the program's fastest time (3:47.33) by finishing the race in 3:45.90.       

The meet begins Tuesday at 12:00 p.m. on the Biscayne Bay Campus at Florida International University in Miami, Florida
