DENTON, Texas (12/19/07) Alicia Hale has been honored as the Sun Belt Swimmer of the Week after her performance at the UNLV Winter Invitational held this past weekend in Las Vegas, Nev.
Hale continued to etch her name in the Mean Green record books. The sophomore from Schertz, Texas, broke two individual school records and was a member of two of the Mean Green relay teams that also tallied school best times at the UNLV Winter Invite held this past weekend. Hale placed second in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:26.72, setting the school record previously set by Jaime Hosner in 2006. In the leadoff leg of the 400 freestyle relay, Hale swam a 52.18 to set the school record in the 100-yard free.
She teamed with fellow underclassmen Elizabeth Weiss, Morgan Morrow and Nicole Leslie to place fourth in the relay and set a school record with a time of 3:29.47 after anchoring the 200 free relay team to a record-setting time earlier in the invite. Hale also took home a second place finish in the 200 freestyle and missed setting another record by less than a tenth of a second. Three of Hale’s four records were all recorded on the third and final day of the invitational.
Hale now owns nine of the top ten fastest times in school history in the 200 freestyle. She also has seven top ten marks in the 500 free. This marks the second time in Hale’s two-year career at North Texas that she has earned conference swimmer of the week honors.
The Mean Green will take the holidays off before returning back to dual-meet action against New Mexico State, Jan. 8, 2008. That meet is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. in Las Cruces, N.M.
