LINCOLN, Nebraska (11/22/08) - North Texas freshman Rosa Gentile broke the school record in the 100 Butterfly twice and the 800 Freestyle Relay team set a new record as the Mean Green remained second after three days at the Husker Invitational. Rice leads with 954.5 points and North Texas is behind them at 896.
Gentile broke the record in the 100 Fly the first time during the preliminaries (57.28) where she finished third. Then in the finals, Rosa took second setting a new record (56.98). The previous record was held by Taryne Cantillo (57.92) from the Sun Belt championships last season.
In all, North Texas had five swimmers finish in the top 12 of the 100 Butterfly.
"I was proud of the way the swimmers finished today," said Mean Green swimming head coach Joe Dykstra. "More records were broken and we're right there in second. We've got to keep up the pace and qualify well tomorrow in the preliminaries. I hope we swim like we did today."
North Texas also broke the school record in the 800 Freestyle Relay. The team of Alicia Hale, Angie Dworschack, Emily Floyd, and Erika Roach won the event getting a time of 7:30.19, nearly four seconds under the old record of 7:34.10.
The 200 Freestyle saw North Texas Texas finish one, two, and three. Alicia Hale won the event clocking in at 1:51.09 while Erika Roach took second (1:52.38) and Emily Floyd claimed third (1:52.57).
The Mean Green is in position for a great finish heading into the fourth and final day of the Husker Invite tomorrow.
