Swimming & Diving Hosts Mean Green Duals On Saturday

DENTON, Texas (11/6/08) - The North Texas swimming & diving team hosts the Mean Green Duals on Saturday, November 8 at the Pohl Recreation Center. The events are set to begin at 10:30 a.m.

The diving events will be going on at the same time across the street at the Public Education Building (PEB).

Prestigious programs such as Arkansas, Colorado State, New Mexico State, and SMU will be competing. North Texas and the rest of the teams all square off against each other in dual meets.

"We are looking to step up to the challenge," North Texas head coach Joe Dykstra commented. "Our training is getting better each week and the youth on our team continues to grow. There will be a lot of good swimmers and divers at the meet on Saturday. This is a unique opportunity for all of us."

SMU and Arkansas come in as nationally ranked schools.

The 14th ranked Mustangs of Conference USA are 1-0-1 so far this season. Their last meet was a 121.5-121.5 tie against Penn State on November 1. North Texas and SMU have already seen each other this year back on October 3 at the North Texas Relays where SMU finished in first place.

The No.22 Razorbacks from the SEC hold a 2-1 record this season including a 151-149 win over LSU in the team's last meet on October 30. Arkansas and North Texas faced off last season in Fayetteville with the Razorbacks getting the W.

Colorado State from the Mountain West and New Mexico State from the WAC have looked impressive early on this season.

The Rams post an undefeated 4-0 record in '08-09. The team last competed on October 25 at San Diego State taking the meet 170.5-129.5. At the Mean Green Duals on Saturday, North Texas and Colorado State will have their first-ever dual meeting. Before making it to Saturday, CSU goes up against TCU on Friday.

The Aggies of NMSU have a record of 3-2 last competing versus Air Force on October 11. New Mexico State won going away, 175-67. The Mean Green and the Aggies are familiar to each other with 13 total dual meets in the history of the two schools. Both teams competed in Las Cruces in '07-08 with NMSU winning 143-98 on January 8.

North Texas last swam at Sun Belt foe New Orleans on October 24 defeating the Privateers, 171-116. This marked the first dual meet win of the season for North Texas. The team got impressive performances from two freshmen, Rosa Gentile and Brandi Townsend, who combined to win seven events. Diver Delia Covo also became the second best all-time performer at North Texas in the one-meter with a score of 224.63.
