Mean Green Defeats FIU At Sun Belt Fall Classic

LAS CRUCES, NM (10/25/03) - The North Texas women’s swimming and diving team defeated Florida International 118.50-114.50 Saturday in the second day of competition at the Sun Belt Fall Classic.

Bethany Pipes, Elizabeth Johnson, Emilia Tudose and Kara Brock led North Texas with at least one top-five finish in a field that included swimmers from Western Kentucky, Florida International, New Mexico State and Denver. Pipes took third in both the 200 Freestyle and 100 Backstroke with times of 1:58.23 and 1:02.02, respectively. Johnson finished fourth in both the 100 and 200 Freestyle, while Tudose claimed fourth place in the 100 Freestyle. Brock turned in her best performance in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:10.98 that was good enough for fifth place.

Tudose, Devon Dlouhy, Pipes and Johnson teamed up to take fourth place in the 400 Freestyle Relay with a season-best time of 3:44.37.

The Mean Green set season-best times in the 200 Medley Relay and 100 Freestyle on Friday. Pipes, Brock, Kathleen McManis and Johnson were members of the 200 Medley Relay team that posted a season-best time of 1:56.27. Johnson swam a season-best 55.27 in the 100 Freestyle that was less than a second off her school record-time of 54.54, set at the 2003 Sun Belt Conference Championships.

The Mean Green will host Trinity University on Nov. 1 in its first ever meet at the new North Texas Student Recreation Center. The meet is set to get underway at 3 p.m.
