North Texas Freshman Swimmer Sets School Record At Rice

HOUSTON (10/12/02) The North Texas women’s swimming and diving team (0-2) saw its first action of the 2002-03 season Saturday, falling 86-114 against Rice and 76-167 against Houston in head-to-head competition.

The Mean Green began competition against the Owls at 10 a.m. before facing the Cougars at 3:30 p.m.

Rice won both relay events against the Mean Green and was able to tie down first place in eight of the remaining nine events.  However, the Mean Green took home second-place in three events and had nine top-three finishes.  Freshman Brooke Louisell (Garland, Tex.) was one of two Mean Green swimmers to win an event title, posting a school-record time of 2:29.33 in the 200-yard breaststroke.  The Mean Green's Bethany Pipes also won the 200-Yard Backstroke with a time of 2:10.79.  The Owls jumped out to a 43-12 lead through the first three events and North Texas couldn’t recover.

Bethany Pipes (San Antonio, Tex.) led the Mean Green against Houston with two first-place finishes.  She won the 1,000-Yard Freestyle and 100-Yard Backstroke with times of 10:57.93 and 1:02.15, respectively.  The meet was tied 18-18 after two events, but the Cougars outscored North Texas 59-17 over the next four events to open a commanding 77-35 advantage with seven events remaining.

The Mean Green will next compete at the First Annual Sun Belt Fall Classic, scheduled for October 25-26.  The meet will feature Air Force and four Sun Belt Conference schools, including North Texas.
