DENTON, Texas (5/13/08) Head swimming and diving coach Joe Dykstra was honored at the Greater Denton Sports Commission banquet last night as the University of North Texas Coach of the Year.
In just two seasons at the University of North Texas, Dykstra has quickly turned the Mean Green swimming and diving team into a force to be reckoned with in the Sun Belt Conference.
Dykstra was awarded the 2008 Sun Belt Conference Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year following a season in which the Mean Green set every swimming record in the school record books and tallied its first two NCAA consideration cuts in the program’s 10-year history.
North Texas finished the 2007-08 season ranked No. 15 in the mid-major poll after finishing No. 24 in Dykstra’s first season the year before. It was the first time in the program’s history in which the Mean Green has ended its season ranked in the top 25 in consecutive seasons.
Digging deeper in the numbers, the top three all-time performers in 13 separate events have all taken place under Dykstra’s guidance. Dykstra has helped 11 North Texas swimmers earn all-conference honors.
