Mean Green Holds National Student-Athlete Day

DENTON, Texas (4/6/12) - The Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted National Student Athlete Day at the Mean Green Soccer Complex on Monday night.

Over 100 student athletes participated in a series of three competitions including a chicken toss, water balloon toss and a three-legged race.  All the athletes were put into various colored teams with members of SAAC as their team leaders. Delia Covo, SAAC president and junior diver, emceed the event.

"It was great to see the athletes come together and compete in events that required little athletic ability," said Michele Lowry, the faculty advisor for SAAC. "SAAC did a tremendous job in rallying the student athletes and getting them excited about the event.  I think I had just as much fun watching the event as the athletes did participating,"

Points were awarded for each event and the team with the highest amount of points claimed the National Student Athlete Day championship. The winning team sported the Mean Green National Student Athlete Day t-shirt designed by SAAC treasurer and senior football player, Nic Summerfield.

The annual event is held every spring to honor student athletes across the country.  Schools can choose how they decide to celebrate the event each year.  The Mean Green has a tradition of creating a fun-filled evening that allows the student athletes to come together as a community before the end of the school year.
