North Texas Hosts Sun Belt Championships
North Texas hosts the Sun Belt Swimming & Diving Championships for the first time in program history at the Rockwall Aquatics Center of Excellence (R.A.C.E.). North Texas has finished 3rd in the last two Sun Belt Championship Meets, the highest finishes ever for the Mean Green, and are looking to improve upon that finish with home pool advantage and rank of 12th nationally among mid-majors.
This season, North Texas has had two divers, Mary Beth Geeze and Delia Covo, qualify for the NCAA Zone Meet, the first time North Texas has had multiple divers qualify, and the first time any diver qualified since 2003. Rosa Gentile set the school record and made the NCAA ‘B’ Consideration cut in the 100-yard butterfly, becoming only the second individual to make NCAA Consideration for North Texas since 2008. Gentile also set the school record in the 200-yard individual medley this season, and Hilary Reidmann set the school mark in the 400-yard individual medley.
The Mean Green has swam one of their toughest schedules in program history, with 7 of their 11 dual meets coming against programs either ranked in the Top 25 or receiving votes in the TYR/ CSCAA College Swimming Rankings.
Ticket Information
Tickets will be on sale at the spectator entrance to the R.A.C.E. All-session passes are available for $20, while individual day passes are available for $8. Students from all Sun Belt schools are admitted free with a student ID.
Mid-Major Rank
North Texas jumped into the latest CollegeSwimming.com / CSCAA Mid-Major Poll, ranking 12th nationally among mid-major programs. This is North Texas’ first apperance in the rankings this season. North Texas’ conference rivals Denver and Western Kentucky rank 4th and 7th respectively.
The Mid-Major rankings use an objective point system to compare teams’ relative strength in a traditional dual meet lineup as submitted by participating teams. The ranking is available to those institutions that a) are not members of a BCS conference or Mountain West Conference, or b) provide fewer than one-half of the allowable scholarships under the NCAA rules.
North Texas at the Sun Belt Championships
North Texas has participated in the Sun Belt Championship each year since joining the league in 2000-01, and posted 3rd place finishes each of the last two years, the highest finishes for North Texas in this event.
Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives
Mary Beth Geeze and Delia Covo became the first North Texas divers since Melissa Whitaker in 2003 to qualify for the NCAA Zone Diving Meet. Covo and Geeze become the 3rd and 4th divers to reach the NCAA meet, and become the first pair to qualify in the same year. This season, Delia Covo has posted three of the five best three-meter diving scores in school history, and has twice set the school record this season, first against SMU, and then again at the SCAC Western Shootout. Mary Beth Geeze would have broke the school record at the Western Shootout on the 3-meter board, if not for Covo’s performance that day.
No Frogs In The Mean Green Pond
North Texas’ home swim meet against TCU on Feb. 2 was been postponed due to the snowy weather in the DFW Metroplex. The meet that was scheduled to start at 6 p.m. will be not be made up.
Johnson Eligible To Compete
Freshman Diver Catherine Johnson enrolled at North Texas in January, and is now eligble to practice & compete. The Swindon, England native can compete starting with the TCU dual meet.
This Is Our Olympics
North Texas’ meet against Florida Gulf Coast took place in a 50-meter Olympic pool instead of the NCAA standard 25-yard pool, therefore times need to be converted to compare to previous times and to qualifiy for NCAA consideration.
To convert the times, the raw time is converted to total seconds, then multiplied by the appropriate factor. The resulting time is truncated (no rounding) after hundredths of a second (two decimal places) and then expressed again in minutes and seconds.

Rarefied Air
The meet on October 23 in Las Cruces, N.M., took place at 3896 feet above sea level. Due to the altitude, all races of 200 yards or more had a time adjustment. For races of 200 yards, 0.5 seconds are subtracted, 2.5 seconds for 400 or 500 yard races, and 6.3 seconds from the 1000.
Houston Recap
HOUSTON- North Texas swimming & diving fell 171-129 to Houston on Saturday morning. North Texas ‘A’ relay won the 400 Freestyle Relay, and Seabre Pope and Alexis Widacki finished 1-2 in the 50-yard freestyle for the Mean Green.
Angie Dworschack finished 2nd in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:21.89, a North Texas season-best, topping the time of 10:22.36 set by Dawn Richerson on Friday at Rice.
North Texas finished 2-3-4 in the 200-yard freestyle, with both Erika Roach and Dawn Richerson finishing within a half-second of Kim Eeson, who won the event with a time of 1:55.59.
Seabre Pope and Alexis Widacki finished one-two in the 50-yard freestyle with times of 24.29 and 24.67, respectively.
North Texas ‘A’ relay team of Alexis Widacki, Seabre Pope, Carleigh Kutac and Natalie Jakopin won the 400-yard freestyle with a time of 3:32.62.
Rice Recap
HOUSTON- Dawn Richerson set a North Texas season-best in the 1000-yard freestyle as North Texas fell to Rice 168-97 on Friday afternoon.
Richerson finished second in the 1000-yard freestyle event with a time of 10:22.36, besting her previous best of 10:26.90 and previous season-best for the Mean Green of 10:25.26, set on January 7th by Angie Dworshack. Richerson finished seven hundredths of a second behind Nicole Delaloye, who won the event for the Owls.
Rosa Gentile finished second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.96, finishing just over three tenths of a second behind Michelle Gean of Rice.
Seabre Pope posted a time of 24.37 in the 50-yard freestyle, and finished six hundredths of a second behind Karina Wlostowska for first place. Pope then turned around to post a 53.33 in the very next event, the 100-yard freestyle, finishing only three-tenths of a second behind only Shelby Bottoms of Rice.
