Mean Green Swimming & Diving Wins Trinity Invitational

SAN ANTONIO (2/1/03) -- The North Texas women's swimming and diving team scored 1,195 points to triumph over six other teams at the Trinity Invitational this weekend and claim its first-ever tournament title.

The Mean Green finished second at the UALR Christmas Invitational earlier this season and had one other runner-up finish in its five-year history, but brought home its first championship in 10 tournaments all-time.

Trinity finished second with 936 points, Southwestern third (387 points), McMurry College fourth (322 points), John Brown fifth (235 points), Palo Alto Community College sixth (98 points) and Incarnate Word seventh (seven points).

The Mean Green won 13 of 18 events, led by Bethany Pipes four event championships. Pipes was the top finisher in the 500-Yard Freestyle, 100-Yard Backstroke, 200-Yard Freestyle and 200-Yard Backstroke. Also claiming first place in at least one event were Elizabeth Jennings (200-Yard IM and 100-Yard Fly), Kara Brock (100-Yard Breaststroke), Melissa Whitaker (Three-Meter Diving), Erin Mouser (200-Yard Fly) and Kristin Carson (1650-Yard Freestyle).

Whitaker broke her own school record in the three-meter diving event with a score of 433.95. Mouser and Carson both posted the team's season-best time in the 200-Yard Butterfly (2:15.93) and the 1650-Yard Freestyle (18:21.64), respectively.

The Mean Green didn't just have success in the individual events, however. North Texas won all three relay events at the meet, which included the 200-Yard Medley, 200-Yard Freestyle and the 400-Yard Freestyle.

North Texas next competes at the Sun Belt Conference Championships, scheduled for Feb. 13-15.
