NT Posts Wins over UL Monroe, Austin College In Home Meet

DENTON (1/25/03) -- Sophomore Bethany Pipes swam to second-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke and was a member of North Texas' second-place team in the 200-yard medley relay as Mean Green women's swimming and diving team registered victories over Louisiana-Monroe and Austin College in a four-team meet Saturday at the Physical Education Building.

North Texas topped UL Monroe by a final score of 67-46 while downing Austin College, 100-9. Rice was the only team in the meet to sweep all three opponents.

Pipes, who was named All-Sun Belt Conference a year ago, recorded a time of 1:57.78 to place second in the 200-yard freestyle.  She finished with a time of 1:01.81 to take second in the 100-yard backstroke. The Mean Green's 200-yard medley relay team consisted of Pipes, Kara Brock, Liz Jennings and Charlene McClain and finished second with a time of 1:53.35.

North Texas freshman Elizabeth Johnson placed second in the 50-yard freestyle with a 25.67 timing and Christina Bernal was second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:10.94. In the diving events, North Texas' Melissa Whitaker also took second in both the one- and three-meter events.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the North Texas foursome of Johnson, Jennings, McClain and Charity Dillow also placed second with a time of 1:42.26.
